DInitial Setup

  1. You will need to have .NET 4.5 or above installed. Windows 8 and above should have it already installed. Please take note that this will not run on Windows RT.

  2. Download the original OpenBVE Installer from here: http://openbve.org/. Click on the Auto-Installer to download the package. Install it on anywhere on your PC. If needed, launch the OpenAL installer to install extra graphics drivers to run the game.

  3. Next, download the route/train files. These can be obtained from the following sites:

Installing routes

  1. The route folder, when extracted, should have a least three directories:

  • Object

  • Route

  • Sound

 2. Check the folder where OpenBVE is installed. Ensure that the directory is present; if not, create the folders: UserData/LegacyContent/Railway.

 3. Move the folders into Railway. You can merge the folders if the three main folders already exist inside LegacyContent.

Installing trains

  1. The train folder, when extracted should contain at least a folder: <TrainName>

  2. If there are 'Object' or 'Sound' folders, move and merge them to the respective object and sound folder for the route.

Starting your train journey:

  1. Launch OpenBVE.exe. For Windows 8 and above, right click and Run As Administrator. If it doesn't launch, check that OpenAL and .NET 4.5 is installed. Otherwise, restart everything again.

  2. In the Routes box, navigate to the route file where it was installed(<Install Location>/Userdata/LegacyContent/Railway/Route). The filename should be: <Routename>.csv

  3. Do the same for the Train box. The file extension should also be .csv.

  4. Press on 'Start game.' Wait for the game to load.

  5. There may be errors after the load is complete. However, if the route or train has missing or odd textures, or the game crashes, check that you have installed the files correctly, and that the train/route is not corrupted.
